Cyclist killed in Old Town crash |
A man was killed in Old Town Wednesday morning when he apparently rode his bike into an 80,000 pound truck hauling sand and was crushed to death. The driver of the truck, Matt Reynolds of Goleta, was nearly finished turning right on South Kellogg Avenue from Hollister Avenue about 8:15 when the accident occurred. Reynolds said he believes the cyclist, who has not been identified, hit the truck between its two trailers and was struck by both right-side tires of the rear trailer. “I think both sets (of tires) got him ’cause I felt two bumps,” he said at the scene. “I looked in the mirror and saw his bike.” Before the crash, he said, “I never, ever saw him.” The cyclist’s body lay on the street for more than hour, covered by a yellow tarp, while sheriff’s deputies investigated the scene.
