Campaign to prevent sexual violence
A campaign focused on giving parents tools to talk with teen s about preventing sexual violence has been initiated by the Rape Crisis Center in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The Seeds of Change Campaign stresses that sexual violence is youth violence, and offers information to parents, guardians and other relatives about ways to start conversations with youth about equality, relationships, sexuality and violence. One in four girls and one in six boys experience sexual assault before age 18, according to the center, and those closest to them are most able to help teens find alternatives to violence, build healthy relationships based on equality and respect, and to be safe. During April, the Rape Crisis Center, in collaboration with nonprofit partners, will be distributing Seeds of Change packets containing wildflower seeds and helpful tips for families. Packets will be available at local schools and businesses, and an affiliated bi-lingual Family Festival, including live music, food and activities for children, teens and adults, will take place April 27 from 2-4:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. For additional information, call 963-6832.
