One Sings Like Hell, so does the other

The popular singer-songwriter showcase Sings Like Hell will present a double bill of singing strummers at 8 p.m. Saturday October 22, in the Lobero Theater.

Grammy winning singer songwriter and guitar slinger Dave Alvin returns to the Lobero with the Guilty Men, now including the great guitarist Chris Miller. The dueling solos between Chris and Dave just shred . . . and Dave has a fantastic collection of new songs from his latest CD, “Ashgrove.”

And opening will be Greg Trooper, who has long been regarded as one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in Nashville, with albums that literally define the Americana folk-pop sound. Now he’s walking in new territory with “Dark Side of the Street”-a collection of gorgeous blue-eyed soul music co-produced by the legendary Dan Penn.
All Seats: $39.50. Call the Lobero box office at 963-0761.

Will Power breaks new ground at the University

Will Power, a pioneer in the emerging genre of hip-hop theater, performs his sensational and energetic monologue “Flow” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 25 in UCSB Campbell Hall. Written and performed by the dynamic young actor, rapper and modern-day griot Will Power, and directed by theater pioneer Danny Hoch, “Flow” is the tale of seven storytellers, their quest for survival in a world of modern, urban pitfalls, and the search for a new language to make age-old lessons endure for a younger generation. This winner of the theater trophy at the 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival blends powerful narratives, live beats spun by an on-stage DJ, and vital rhythm and rhyme into an unforgettable performance.

The audience is welcome to stay after the performance for a Meet-the-Artist discussion with Will Power, who is presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures and sponsored by the Daily Nexus and Ramada Unlimited. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $19 for UCSB students who must show valid ID at ticket purchase and the evening of the show. For tickets or more information, call UCSB Arts & Lectures at (805) 893-3535.
