An expanded Veterans Day observance at Arlington West, next to Stearns Wharf, featured a sand sculpture, created by "Scotty," of a fallen U.S. combatant in Iraq and his comrade. More than two thousand candles were lit at the crosses set up on East Beach — one for every American life lost in the Iraq War. For the first time since Arlington West was established, candles also were lit for the dead Iraqi civilians.
