DeMilio, Voice Sports Rep orter Girl’s golf Dos Pueblos Medalist Sarah Fox’s round of 35 paced undefeated Dos Pueblos Sept. 14 at the Glen Annie Golf club when they won a three-way match with a score of 195 against Hart (233) and Oxnard (266). Julia Williams shot a 36 and Michelle Del Mese fired a 41.
In a three-way match Friday at Rancho San Marcos, Woodridge got past San Marcos 218-242. Laguna Hills shot 250. Despite Rebecca Wolseley’s medallist round of 44, tied with La Reina’s Samantha Katz, San Marcos was second to La Reina in a three-way match Sept. 15 at Sandpiper Golf Club. La Reina was in at 251, San Marcos shot 260 and Santa Ynez had 281. Ashleigh Wolseley carded a 47 and Katsev shot 55.
Dos Pueblos
Dos Pueblos At the Dave Mohs Invitational, Dos Pueblos fell to Esperanza 3-0 in their quarterfinals game Saturday at Edison High. The Chargers finished first in their pool, winning all their matches. Prior to the Esperanza contest they recorded 2-0 sweeps against Corona del Mar and San Clemente. At the North Torrance tournament Saturday San Marcos was upended by Saxon in the second round of the playoffs. San Marcos senior Katherine Hinkle was named to the all-tournament team.
Dos Pueblos Dos Pueblos was edged by Riverside Poly Saturday, 10-9, with a late goal in the final two minutes, in the championship game of the Riverside tournament. Sage Wright led the Chargers with three goals and cage-keeper Russell Russo LeVasseur had 14 saves. In an earlier game, DP continued its double-digit scoring onslaught with a 13-7 win over Murrietta Valley. Kevin Kuga scored four markers to lead Dos Pueblos. On Friday, the Chargers defeated Damien, 14-6, and Sept. 15 Dos Pueblos bested La Habra, 19-5, and Arroyo Valley 18-2.
San Marcos The San Marcos Royals won two matches on Saturday to win the Riverside tournament consolation bracket championship. On Saturday they went undefeated, winning 8-7 over San Gorgonio and 8-4 against Yucaipa. Santa Barbara Santa Barbara was turned back Friday at Servite, 14-12. Facing an uphill battle with a 12-4 deficit at the half, the Dons outscored the Friars in the second half, 8-2. Santa Barbara’s Mike Sweeney tallied four goals to lead the Dons.
San Marcos Jenna Ridgeway, a senior, won the girls' division Saturday in 18 minutes and 30 seconds. Teammate Claire Woodard was third, 20:17. On the boys' side, Mark Berquist finished seventh with a 16:53 while Alex Corliss was 26th at 17:48. Dos Pueblos For the boys', Tyler Rattray finished fourth in 16:45, Will Yochum, 15:46, was fifth and Adam Zok was 13th in 17:11.
Bishop Diego At La Playa Stadium Friday, Bishop Diego’s defense clamped down on Kilpatrick, holding the Mustangs to 66 total yards in offense to take a 17-7 decision. Craig Kohler (two interceptions) and captain Steven Ceriale spearheaded an inspired Cardinal defense. Jacob Sandoval, running back, gained 152 yards on 28 attempts. Bishop travels to St. Joseph’s tonight.
First the good news. Santa Barbara hosted Hueneme Friday and came away with a 38-20 win. Justin Fareed rushed for 164 yards on 15 carries, all in the first half, and scored three touchdowns. The Dons racked up 307 yards on the ground. Now for the other news. In the third quarter, Fareed banged his right elbow and left the game for the hospital for a bone scan. Now for the better news. Fareed was diagnosed with a deep bruise with no apparent structural damage. Santa Barbara entertains Righetti this evening at 7:30.
San Marcos was turned back by Rancho Buena Vista Friday in Vista, 40-21. This, despite quarterback Cameron Ely’s 261 passing yards (12 of 28), and three touchdowns. Joe Guiterrez had seven receptions for 159 yards and one touchdown. Thomas Hyatt and Justin Freras also had scoring catches. San Marcos hosts San Luis Obispo tonight at 7 pm.
Westmont College In San Diego Saturday, Kelsey Voetmann led the Warriors to their 11th straight win with 19 kills as Westmont defeated San Diego Christian, 3-1.
At the Sanford Invitational, UCSB fell 3-1 Saturday to Sanford. Janine Sandell led the Gauchos with 19 kills and Emily Hendrickson posted 21 digs. Megan Blackshire notched 13 kills.
Westmont College Both the Warriors' teams won at the Westmont Invitational Saturday in Montecito. Robby Cherry was first to the line as teammate Caleb Ambrose took second. Anna Stumbo won for the Westmont women, she also won last year’s race, as teammate Jessie Goulder placed fifth.
Westmont College baseball coach Rob Crawford, along with Westmont students, staff and Red Cross volunteers, drove a bus, loaned from the Santa Barbara Foresters and a rental truck loaded with donated supplies, to Shreveport L.a. Sept. 10 to aid in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The convoy arrived in Shreveport on Sept. 12 and began setting up a shelter at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum. Some of Crawford’s crew was helping in the kitchen and some were helping with security. Crawford delivered supplies around the area to the other shelters. The crew was then asked to go to Houston on Sept. 14. to aid in the transfer of evacuees from the Astrodome and Relief Center to other shelters.
LA Dodgers The Los Angeles Dodgers are donating three 45-passenger buses to Futuro Vivo a school of 500 underprivileged children in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. Hall of Fame coach Tommy Lasorda obtained the buses from the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority earlier in the month with the assistance of Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, 4th District. They were transported to the Dominican Republic Sept. 13.
Westmont College on Saturday will induct four athletes into their Athletic Hall of Fame at Murchison gymnasium: Nicole Smith-Gabelein, 1992-1995 soccer; Kelly Barnes-Grene, 1991-1995 volleyball and track and field; Stacie Larsen McInnes, 1985-1990 cross country and track and field; and Ron Mulder, 1958-1963 administrator, coach and athlete. Smith-Gabelein was a three-time All-American, and led the Warriors to an NAIA National Championship n 1994. Barnes-Greene was a two-time All-American, on the Warriors squad that finished third in the NAIA National Championship. Mulder was a baseball and basketball player and as the men’s basketball coach guided his clubs to two national tournaments placing eighth both years.
