![]() Boy's basketball Dos Pueblos After taking a 23-12 first-period lead at Buena Friday, the Chargers and Bulldogs played even for the next three periods. The Chargers outscored the Bulldogs, 13-12, in the fourth period for a 60-57 win. Julyan Stone paced DP with 19 points while Tom Woolley and Bo Rodriguez each notched nine.
"We hung on," said Royals' coach Chris Hantgin after San Marcos withstood a second half comeback by Oak Park, January 20, to win, 47-44. The Royals led, 36-25, at the end of three periods. However, the Eagles stepped up their defense and outscored their hosts 19-11 in the fourth quarter. Jeff Menzel's 12 points and nine boards led San Marcos. Brennan McNulty posted eight points and sophomore Scott Moll came off the bench to tally seven. "[It was] a tale of two halves," said Hantgin. "The first half we did very well. We were bad [in the second half] on offensive rebounding and offensive execution was poor."
Round one goes to Carpinteria. Carpinteria visited Bishop Friday and survived a fourth period Cardinal rally to escape with a 73-61 win. The Warriors' Jacob Ranger led all players with 27 points as teammates Hernan Martinez and Dom Dawson had 16 and 14, respectively. Dawson drained four baskets from beyond the arc. Bishop was led by Ryan Aijian's 26 points while Johnny Ward contributed 13. Aijian and Ward each hit two 3-balls.
Santa Barbara was defeated by Ventura, 69-65, at home Friday. This, despite a 32-point effort from freshman Roberto Nelson including five 3-pointers. He was 10-of-17 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line.
Bishop Diego Bishop played Oak Park even for three periods for a 31-31 stalemate. The Eagles, ranked No. 13 in CIF Division 3-A, outscored the Cardinals, 12-6, in the fourth period, escaping with a 43-37 win. Nita Sims led Bishop with 12 points, Larissa Gonzales had seven and Brandi Bullman added six.
Dos Pueblos' 18-point fourth period failed to overtake Buena, on the road Jan. 18, and the Chargers were nipped by the Bulldogs, 55-47. Gillian Nugent scored 17 points to lead DP while Amber Stevens notched 10.
Jackie Perez's 15 points wasn't enough to turn the tide as Santa Barbara was set back by Oak Park, 46-38, Jan. 19 at home. Katy Larsen and Austin Hamilton each scored seven.
San Marcos A 1-3 record at the TYR Cup in Orange County last weekend was the Royals' good news story. They finished 14th in the elite tournament. Last year the finished 16th. San Marcos defeated Woodbridge Saturday, 13-5, behind Christine Goetsch's five goals and Natalie Chardon's two tallies. In their second game Saturday, San Marcos was edged by Northwood, 6-5, as Goetsch scored three. The team was turned aside at Temple City High, 11-6, Jan. 19. Goetsch and Danae Wilke each scored twice to pace the Royals. Coach Brian Roth was returning to a school where he had guided squads to multiple CIF championships.
At Ventura High Jan. 19, Santa Barbara coach Mark Walsh had the luxury of playing his entire squad when the Dons caged the Cougars, 9-4. Cailee Kilroy and Kelly Easterday each scored two goals and Cortney Collyer recorded four steals and four assists.
UCSB Led by Cal Poly's Davin Whitten and his 24 game-high points, the Mustangs kept UCSB winless with a 74-62 victory Saturday at Mott Gym in San Luis. The Gauchos have lost eight-straight away from the Thunderdome. Cecil Brown led the Gauchos with 15 points, Chris Devine had 13 and Alex Harris added 12. Westmont College Point Loma Nazarene went on an 11-0 run in the final seven minutes Saturday, at home, to overtake Westmont's 65-61 lead and win, 81-74 . Santiago Aguirre's 24 points and 14 rebounds led Westmont as Nick Debban had 17 points and 10 boards. With their stunning 67-47 upset of Biola Jan. 17, Westmont rode the euphoria to a 17-point first half lead against The Masters College Jan. 19 at home. Masters rallied to within seven at the break, but Westmont prevailed, 84-77 on the strength of five players scoring in double-figures. Kevin Bartell led the Warriors with 22 points, Debban had 17, Aguirre added 12 while Tyler Dutton and Josh Ware each tossed in 10. Women's' basketball UCSB Using a swarming-to-the-ball and a trapping defense, in the first half Saturday in a Thunderdome matinee Cal Poly bolted out to a 17-8 lead midway through the period. All of USCB's points came from the free throw line. The Mustangs defense created 19 turnovers and 29 for the game. UCSB battled back to a 22-21 deficit with 7:30 remaining in the half however a 15-8 run by Cal Poly widened the margin en route to a 49-37 advantage at the break and an 82-71 win. Jessica Wilson led UCSB with 22 points. Jenna Green added 18.
At Point Loma Nazarene Saturday the hosts shot 60 percent from the field Saturday and doubled up on the Warriors rebounds, 20-10 for a 71-57 victory. Megan Fate paced the Warriors with 17 points as Meghan O'Donogue was held to only two points. Visiting Masters College defeated Westmont, 80-64, Jan. 19 at Westmont. The Warriors, led by Ali Moody's 16 points, had four players in double-digit scoring. Sara Uhlman scored 13. O'Donogue and Fate each contributed 11.
Although SBCC trailed by nine points at the half at home against Allen Hancock, Kayla Brier's 3-pointer in the final six minutes fueled a Vaquero comeback that resulted in a 57-55 win. Jessica Romero led SBCC, with 18 points. Melissa Gutierrez chipped in 11.
The Goleta Bulls Basketball Club won two trophies Jan. 14 and 15 at the Santa Barbara Boys and Girls Club 2006 Martin Luther King Tournament. The Bulls, coached by Carlos Guerrero, took second place in the boys' eighth grade division by defeating the Santa Barbara Ballers, 63-48, and the Ventura Heat, 51-49. The Bulls fell to Conejo, 45-43, in the championship game. Johnny Fierro and Robbie Mestas were named to the all-tournament team. The Lady Bulls, coached by Norman Lowe, beat the Eastside Blazers, 25-18, for second place in the girls' seventh grade division. Marissa Unzueta and Rainee Bethley were selected for the all-tournament team.
Four Goleta Elks Club-sponsored youth shot their way to first place finishes and another took third place at the Elks Club Hoops Shoot in Lompoc Sunday. Shooting the lights out for first place were Trent Gerke (19-of-25), boys 8-9; Ben York (20-of-25), boys 10-11; Jessica Escalante (15- of-25), girls 10-11; and Stefanie Salinas (16-of-25), girls 12-13. Sara Hernandez, in girls 8-9, placed third.
Jessica Escalante, 11, who attends Hollister School, placed fourth in the nation in the Pepsi Pass, Punt and Kick competition in Indianapolis' RCA Dome at the Pittsburgh vs. Indianapolis AFC Divisional playoffs. Escalante advanced to the finals after she won the team competition at a San Francisco 49ers game. Ernie Harwell, the radio voice of the Detroit Tigers for over 40 years, a broadcaster for 55 years in the major leagues and a Hall of Fame honoree, will be at Westmont's Page Hall Sunday. Harwell will be speaking and signing his two books, "Life After Baseball" and "Stories from My Life in Baseball." Doors open at 12:15 p. m. for the program which begins at 1:00 p.m. For information about suggested donations, which will go to the Westmont baseball program, call 565-6010. Master of ceremonies will be Ross Porter, 28-year broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Westmont graduate, Ron Shelton will introduce Harwell.
