By D.C. DeMilio, Voice Sports ReporterBoys’ Soccer Bishop Diego Visiting Carpinteria peppered Bishop goalkeeper Jason Ford with 16 shots Friday and took a 5-0 decision. Ford posted 11 saves as the young Cardinals’ squad struggled, with two seniors sitting out. Coach Carlos Landeros cited the leadership of Ford, Marcus Cortez and Bryan Georgi. “We’re a young team [13 sophomores and juniors] and a lot of players are getting time,” he said. “I’m happy with the progress that’s being made and the ground work that’s being laid for future years.”
Jesus Garcia scored the only goal San Marcos would need against visiting Ventura, in the 20th minute Jan. 26, in a 1-0 Royals’ win. Defensive efforts by Chris Krueger and Edgar Martinez were applauded by coach Sal Sixto.
The Santa Barbara Dons remained undefeated in league when they defeated the Chargers 4-0, at Dos Pueblos, Jan. 26. The Dons out-shot the Chargers 19-1 in the first half. Nick Trexler, J. P. Ybarra, Juan Martinez, and Roberto Santana scored for Santa Barbara.

Soraida Casteneda and Caitlin McDermott each tallied twice Jan. 26 to send Santa Barbara past Dos Pueblos 5-1. Sarah Lead also scored for the Dons. Nancy Mejia’s goal for the Chargers avoided a shutout.
Bishop Diego Nita Sims’ game-high 24 points, 23 rebounds, five blocks and four assists Jan. 26 at home were not enough as Bishop was edged by Fillmore, in overtime, 73-71. Amanda Herrera scored 16 points and Alyssa Perez added nine.
San Marcos trailed 33-24 at the half at Santa Barbara High Jan. 26. The Royals could not recover from being pressed into only a nine-point output in the third period, and fell 67-54 despite scoring 21 points in the fourth period. Nicole Hyslop led the Royals with 17 points and Julie Nail had nine. The Dons’ Jackie Perez and Katy Larsen each score 14 points as Sandy Macedo chipped in 11.
Amber Stevens stole the show Jan. 24 at Sovine Gym against cross-town foe San Marcos. Stevens’ six steals and game-high 20 points led Dos Pueblos to a 68-41 win over the Royals. “I anticipated and got the ball,” said Stevens. “You got to do what you got to do to get a victory.” DP’s coach, Maynard Pilapil, added, “She’s our team captain and everybody looks to her to pump up the intensity.” The Chargers turned a 15-12 first-period lead into a half time 38-22 margin when they went on a 16-4 run to open the second period. Backcourt trapping by sisters Lindsay and Morgan Enriquez was key. “They play extreme, fundamental defense perfectly,” Pilapil said. “They’re pesky, annoying.” Chessie Jackson, DP’s center, scored 14 points. Julie Friesen and Gillian Nugent each had seven. Jenna Ridgway led the Royals with 12 points and Hyslop chipped in 10.
Bishop Diego Led by Ryan Aijian’s 21 points and 12 rebounds, the Cardinals defeated the Seraphs, 60-50 Friday at St. Bonaventure. Feeling their stroke from three-point land, the Cardinals connected on eight 3-balls. Jeremy Ajar drained three, while Aijian and Johnny Ward each netted two. Bishop bested Fillmore 61-52 behind Scott Winnewisseer’s game-high 20 points Jan. 25 at home. Aijian and Stuart Moulton each tallied 13 and Ward contributed 11.
Spenser Schulte’s team-high 15 points led Dos Pueblos past San Marcos, 48-39, in Sovine Gym Jan. 25. Schulte was inspired by his recently deceased grandfather, Rudi Schulte. “This game, I dedicated to my grandpa, ‘Opi Rudi.’ It’s grandpa in German. I have it [his name] on my shoes.” The Royals opened the contest with a zone defense and the Chargers responded. Schulte hit a three-pointer, was fouled, and converted the free throw in the first two minutes. DP pushed out to an 18-8 first period lead, which they never relinquished. Chargers’ forward Sean Park chipped in nine points. San Marcos’ Skylar Slayman had a game-high 16 points while Jeff Menzel tossed in seven to go with 12 boards.
Santa Barbara Santa Barbara’s Tyler Williams appeared from nowhere Friday to swat a game-tying three-point attempt by San Marcos’ Menzel at the buzzer. Williams’ heroics preserved a 54-51 win at J. R. Richards Gym. His play blunted a Royals’ comeback. San Marcos trailed 41-38 after three periods, then outscored Santa Barbara 17-13 in the fourth. Roberto Nelson’s 19 points led the Dons. Crosby Slaught tossed in 12 and Julian Hewitt added 10. San Marcos was paced by Daniel Ortiz’s 18 points while Slayman contributed nine.
Dos Pueblos Dos Pueblos’ two-week layoff was evident when they entertained San Marcos Jan. 24. A slow Chargers’ start and an intense defense by the Royals had Dos Pueblos leadng 1-0 after two periods. Dos Pueblos prevailed with a 6-2 decision. “We weren’t focused,” said DP coach Danelle Little. “We had finals and it took us a little while to get back into focus. San Marcos has improved a lot. Dos Pueblos got on track with three markers in the third period. The Royals responded with tallies by Christine Goetsch and Natalie Chardon. A fourth period goal by Chargers Erin Sandford and Hilary Schroeder, (her third,) capped the scoring.
Santa Barbara filled the net with four first-period goals Jan. 26 and went on to a 10-3 win over visiting San Marcos. Cortney Collyer, Kelly Easterday and Cailee Kilroy each had two scores for the Dons. San Marcos’ tallies came from Danae Wilke, Goetsch and Chardon.
UCSB Back-to-back sweeps: UCSB swept Pacific Friday at the Thunderdome, then swept Stanford Saturday in Rob Gym. Evan Patak led UCSB with 17 kills after having an off night against the Tigers when he had 12 kills and hit .192. Patak rebounded for a .556 average against the Cardinal. Brian Brunner posted 13 kills and Michael Fisher pounded 10 kills with six block assists. In Friday’s match at the Thunderdome, Theo Brunner led the Gauchos with 12 kills, a .733 average and four blocks. Setter Max Klineman had 40 assists
Westmont College Westmont kept Hope International winless (0-17) Saturday at Murchinson Gym with a 74-48 win. Led by freshman Tyler Dutton’s 19 points, the Warriors had double-digit scoring from Kevin Bartel (14) and Santiago Aguirre (13).
UCSB battled back from a 38-29 half time hole Saturday, at the Thunderdome, turning the tide with a 10-0 run to start the second 20 minutes. Midway through the second half they had a 47-42 lead over the Tigers. And then - they hit the wall. Pacific regrouped and received eight turnovers in the final 10 minutes, fueling a 19-4 run for a 65-53 decision over the Gauchos. UCSB had 19 total turnovers. Cecil Brown led the Gauchos with 17 points and Chris Devine added 10. One positive: although the game being televised on the Fox West Network, 500 more fans (a total of 2,881) supported the home team Friday than came out for Thursday’s Thunderdome evening game.
Westmont College Despite three Westmont players in double figures Saturday, Hope International escaped with a 62-57 win at Westmont’s Murchison Gym. Jasmine Nault was the Royals’ catalyst, scoring scored 31 points. Megan Fate paced Westmont with 20 points, Sara Ulhamn tallied 12 and Ali Moody scored 10.
Karena Bonds blazed a trail at Pacific Saturday when she scored a career-best 18 points as the Gauchos pushed past the Tigers 64-62. Jenna Green contributed 12 points and Kat Suderman tossed in 10.
Karena Thornton, Breanna Amble, Gabrielle Goss and Savanna Fox each had two goals when the Santa Barbara Wahine Strikers, girls' U-10 AYSO All-Stars, went 4-0 in pool play at the Jan. 21-22 area playoffs in Camarillo.

Being an NFC guy (da Bears), I’ll take the spread and the Seahawks. By the way, the first team to 30 wins.
