Boys

Dos Pueblos

Dos Pueblos went cold in the second period at Ventura Friday and was outscored 19-6. The Cougars then took a half time lead, 31-18, en route to a 66-51 win. Julyan Stone paced DP with 13 points and Tom Woolley had 11.

Spenser Schulte, behind a game-high 22-point performance against Santa Barbara High, was the catalyst in the Chargers' 68-47 win Feb. 1 at home.

"We really wanted this game," said Schulte. "We needed to play hard for coach and play hard at home."

Intense DP defense was also key as the Chargers assumed a 19-7 first half lead.

"We pressed a little, [played] a little 3-2 zone and some man," said Chargers' coach Joe Zamora. "I was really proud of my guys because they did that for 32 minutes."

Santa Barbara battled back to trail 31-27 at the break. In the third period Schulte scored 10 points as the Chargers were in command, 49-33.

Dos Pueblos spread the scoring around. Bo Rodriguez had 11 points. Julyan Stone and Sean Park each chipped in nine. Santa Barbara was led by Tyler Williams' 14 points. Roberto Nelson added 11.

San Marcos

Skylar Slayman's basket with 1:10 left in the first period tied Buena at 14 Friday at the Thunderhut. Slayman finished with a game-high 17 points and the Royals gained their first Channel League victory, 59-50.

"We've had a lot of close games," said Slayman. "It feels good to get a win. We played harder and harder and believed in ourselves."

Daniel Ortiz's two late fourth period free throws tied San Marcos with Ventura Feb. 1. The Cougars went on to outscore the Royals 11-5 in overtime for a 70-64 win. Jeff Menzel led the Royals with 20 points. Ortiz and Slayman each had 11.

Bishop Diego

Visiting Oak Park, ranked No. 3 in CIF Division 3A, came back from a 28-24 deficit at the end of three periods Friday with an 18-0 run, turning back Bishop, 46-33. Ryan Aijian led the Cardinals with 17 points

Girls

San Marcos

San Marcos was turned aside, 63-35, by Buena, ranked No. 2 in CIF Division 1A, Feb. 2 at the Thunderhut. Nicole Hyslop led the Royals with 14 points and Alisa Weirum posted 12.

Dos Pueblos

This time it wasn't a ho-hum affair. When Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara tangled two weeks ago at Santa Barbara High, DP won a defensive struggle, 34-26. At their Jan. 31 encounter in Sovine Gym, it was business as usual: fireworks. The Chargers misfired from the field in the fourth period (5-of-16), and Katy Larsen's two free throws with 24 seconds remaining pushed the Dons past the Chargers, 54-52.

Dos Pueblos had a half-time lead of 34-26 but Santa Barbara battled back to within two, 42-40. The Dons ran off 10 unanswered points to start the fourth. Amber Stevens' lay-up with 30 seconds left knotted the score at 50. Enter Larsen. After being fouled, she toed the line in front of the "Charger Country" student section. Money. Larsen hit both free throws.
Stevens led DP with 12 points, Chessie Jackson scored 11 and Juli Friesen and Margo McInturff each had nine. Santa Barbara was paced by Larsen's 14 points, Jackie Perez added 13 and Austin Hamilton tossed in 11.

"They really did a good job on the glass today," Chargers coach Maynard Pilapil said of the Dons. "If you own the glass you own the game."

Bishop Diego

Bench players Amanda Herrera and Alyssa Perez provided an extra spark Feb. 1 at La Reina as Bishop won, 53-45. Herrera scored nine points and Perez added eight. Nita Sims recorded 14 points and 16 rebounds for her 15th double-double.
