DeMilio Kyle Shotwell, a senior defensive back with the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, and former Dos Pueblos star, was chosen to play in tomorrow’s Dell East-West Shrine game at Reliant Field in Houston. ESPN will air the contest at 4 p.m. Shotwell, 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, won the Buck Buchanan Award last season as the top defensive player in NCAA Division-1AA. He led the division in tackles for lost yardage, 1.91 per game, was ranked eighth in total tackles with 11.1 this year and set a school record with 158 tackles in his junior season. Shotwell established a Mustangs record, also in his junior year, with 158 tackles.
UCSB men Befitting of his team’s NCAA championship, UCSB coach Tim Vom Steeg was named Division 1 Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. He earned the same honor in 2004 after the Gauchos fell in the first College Cup championship to Indiana on penalty kicks. Gaucho forward Bryan Byrne was picked in Major League Soccer’s Superdraft’s third round, 38th overall, by the New England Revolution. The Castledermot Ireland native will join former UCSB standout Tony Lochhead. Byrne was an All-Big West Conference first team pick in 2006. The Santa Barbara Heat girls U-12 all-star team took second place at the Lompoc Spaceport Classic all-star tournament Jan. 5 and 6. After winning their pool with a 3-0 record and outscoring their opponents 13-0, they defeated another Santa Barbara squad in the semifinals, 5-1. They were edged in the finals by Tulare Heat, 3-2. Hannah Koper, Annie Debruynkops, Amber Holland, Caroline Whelan and Hannah Ball paced the offense, scoring with at least three goals each. Lauren Schmidt and Savanna Fox also had markers. Bianca Dewitte and Emma Trumbull led the team in assists. Gabrielle Goss, Jenna Horwald, Caroline Whelan and Lauren Schmidt played at midfield and defense. Dave Goss is the head coach and Pete Debruynkops and Nick Whelan are the assistants.
