Pressbox: Learn from the champs |
| By D.C. DeMilio, Voice Sports Correspondent The Santa Barbara Foresters, the National Baseball Congress 2006 champions, will hold the first of six winter season prep camps Sunday at Dos Pueblos High. Fielding techniques will be taught by New York Yankee infield coordinator Mickey Kelleher. The session is for ages 14-18 and will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Further details may be obtained by visiting www.sbforesters.org, or calling 684-0657. Instructional meetings will be held every Sunday through February and into March at either Dos Pueblos or Goleta Valley Little League fields from 9 a.m. to noon. Future instruction subjects, dates and sites will be noted in this column on a weekly basis.
Kyle Shotwell, linebacker for Cal Poly SLO and former Dos Pueblos standout, was named the winner of the Pat Tillman award at the Dell Shrine All-Star Game. Shotwell had a game-best five solo tackles and assisted on two.
NFC champion Chicago Bears and the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts will square off in Miami on Feb. 4. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning engineered an 80-yard drive with just over 2 minutes left to play, scoring a come-from-behind 38-34 win over the New England Patriots in Indianapolis Sunday. Indiana running back Joseph Addai bolted over from seven yards out for the winning touchdown. When Marlin Jackson picked off Pats quarterback Tom Brady, with 16 seconds remaining, the Colts’ trip to Miami was assured. This will be the Bears’ first appearance in the big game since they won Super Bowl XX in 1986. In 1971 the Colts, then the Baltimore Colts, beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Super Bowl V. Da Bears’ 46-10 win was against the Patriots. Let the hoopla and hype begin. Email: dcd38@cox.net |
